SMANDEM.
Amsterdam-based SMANDEM. demonstrates that incredible skill and an open-minded approach can blur genre distinctions into pure energy. Inspired by artists such as Herbie Hancock, Christian Scott, Wayne Shorter, Travis Scott, and Drake, this four-member collective creates a sound deeply rooted in the jazz tradition while fearlessly transcending stylistic boundaries and formal etiquette. Their music explores the intersection of delicate musicianship and contemporary popular music.
At the heart of SMANDEM. is a strong friendship that translates seamlessly into their dynamic live performances. Their shows effortlessly shift from lush harmonies to vibrant mixes of dense rhythms and fierce improvisation.
Their debut EP, Self-Titled, released on Super-Sonic Records in early 2021, features collaborations with notable talents like Herbie Hancock's flutist Elena Pinderhughes (USA) and Amsterdam-based artist Pink Oculus. The EP encapsulates the group’s free-spirited approach to music. SMANDEM. comprises Aäron Bouwman (Bass), Rafael Devante Sinay (Guitar), and Kick Woudstra (Drums), who first connected during their studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. They quickly discovered a shared vision and undeniable synergy.
Their remarkable chemistry even caught the attention of Kelly Coker, dean of New York’s renowned New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, who remarked: “There’s never a feeling of trying too hard, and that made it an absolute joy to listen to you. You don’t sound like Weather Report, but you feel like Weather Report.”
With support from Amsterdam platforms such as Super-Sonic Jazz and the Keep An Eye Foundation, SMANDEM. is carving a path as a vanguard in modern music. Their guiding philosophy is simple yet profound:
"Tradition is a living thing—not to be mistaken for history, which is passive. To be alive means to develop, evolve, and adapt, which is exactly what we strive to do with our music."
